The Belchatow Mine is owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA and is due to operate until 0. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 30.2 million tonnes and 39.69 mmtpa of ROM, was the Hambach Mine located in Lodz, Poland. The Hambach Mine is owned by RWE AG, and is due to operate until 2028.
Garzweiler Mine located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was the third-largest mine, the Maritsa East Mine located in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria was the fourth-largest mine and the Ptolemais South Field Mine located in West Macedonia, Greece was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 28.7 million tonnes, 24.1 million tonnes and 18.1 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Garzweiler Mine, the Maritsa East Mine and the Ptolemais South Field Mine had an estimated ROM production of 37.73 mmtpa, 31.69 mmtpa and 23.84 mmtpa respectively. The Garzweiler Mine is owned by RWE AG which is due to operate until 2045, the Maritsa East Mine is owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD which is due to operate until 2087 and the Ptolemais South Field Mine is owned by Public Power Corporation SA.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Belchatow Mine, Hambach Mine, Garzweiler Mine, Maritsa East Mine, and Ptolemais South Field Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 132.6 million tonnes of coal, 174.40 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
