Kiruna Mine in Norrbotten, Sweden, was the largest underground mine in Europe, producing approximately 26.31 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kiruna Mine is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB, and is due to operate until 2036. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 15.16 mmtpa of ROM, was the Malmberget Mine located in Norrbotten, Sweden. The Malmberget Mine is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB, and is due to operate until 2035.
Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine located in Hesse, Germany was the third-largest mine, the Bogdanka Mine located in Lublin, Poland was the fourth-largest mine, and the Soma Mine located in Manisa, Turkey was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 14.54 mmtpa, 14.22 mmtpa and 12.51 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine is owned by K+S AG which is due to operate until 2056, the Bogdanka Mine is owned by Enea SA which is due to operate until 2035 and the Soma Mine is owned by Turkiye Komur Isletmeleri Kurumu.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Kiruna Mine, Malmberget Mine, Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine, Bogdanka Mine, and Soma Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 82.75 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
