Escondida Mine in Antofagasta, was the largest copper-producing mine in Chile, producing approximately 1,011 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 141.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Escondida Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2078. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 630 thousand tonnes and an estimated 102.43 mmtpa of ROM, was the Collahuasi Mine located in Antofagasta. The Collahuasi Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2088.
El Teniente Mine located in Cachapoal was the third-largest mine, the Chuquicamata Mine located in Antofagasta was the fourth-largest mine, and the Los Bronces Mine located in Santiago was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 463 thousand tonnes, 351 thousand tonnes and 327.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The El Teniente Mine, the Chuquicamata Mine and the Los Bronces Mine had an estimated ROM production of 64.09 mmtpa, 79.47 mmtpa and 43.78 mmtpa respectively. The El Teniente Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2072, the Chuquicamata Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2057 and the Los Bronces Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc which is due to operate until 2057.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Escondida Mine, Collahuasi Mine, El Teniente Mine, Chuquicamata Mine, and Los Bronces Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 2,782.7 thousand tonnes of copper, 431.58 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
