Escondida Mine in Antofagasta, was the largest surface mine in Chile, producing approximately 141.81 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (1,010.8 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Escondida Mine is owned by JECO Corporation;BHP;Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2079. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 102.43 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (630 thousand tonnes), was the Collahuasi Mine located in Tarapaca. The Collahuasi Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc;Glencore Plc;ENEOS Holdings Inc, and is due to operate until 2108.
MVC Copper Project located in Cachapoal was the third-largest mine, the Sierra Gorda Project located in Antofagasta was the fourth-largest mine, and the Radomiro Tomic Mine located in Antofagasta was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 60.88 mmtpa, 59.78 mmtpa and 57.64 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the MVC Copper Project produced approximately 29.61 thousand tonnes of copper, the Sierra Gorda Project produced approximately 189 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Radomiro Tomic Mine produced approximately 310.39 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The MVC Copper Project is owned by Amerigo Resources Ltd. which is due to operate until 2038, the Sierra Gorda Project is owned by South32 Ltd;KGHM Polska Miedz SA which is due to operate until 2045 and the Radomiro Tomic Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2066.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Escondida Mine, Collahuasi Mine, MVC Copper Project, Sierra Gorda Project, and Radomiro Tomic Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 422.54 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
