Chile: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Escondida Mine in Antofagasta, was the largest surface mine in Chile, producing approximately 141.81 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (1,010.8 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Escondida Mine is owned by JECO Corporation;BHP;Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2079. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 102.43 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (630 thousand tonnes), was the Collahuasi Mine located in Tarapaca. The Collahuasi Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc;Glencore Plc;ENEOS Holdings Inc, and is due to operate until 2108.
