Chuquicamata Mine in Antofagasta, was the largest underground mine in Chile, producing approximately 79.47 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (350.98 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Chuquicamata Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile, and is due to operate until 2058. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 64.09 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (463.04 thousand tonnes), was the El Teniente Mine located in Cachapoal. The El Teniente Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile, and is due to operate until 2073.
Dacita Project located in Cachapoal was the third-largest mine, the Pacifico Superior Project located in Cachapoal was the fourth-largest mine, and the Punta del Cobre Mine located in Atacama was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 11.92 mmtpa, 3.74 mmtpa and 1.85 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Dacita Project produced approximately 5.43 thousand tonnes of copper, the Pacifico Superior Project produced approximately 32.63 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Punta del Cobre Mine produced approximately 9.88 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The Dacita Project is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2030, the Pacifico Superior Project is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2025 and the Punta del Cobre Mine is owned by Pacific V Region SA.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Chuquicamata Mine, El Teniente Mine, Dacita Project, Pacifico Superior Project, and Punta del Cobre Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 161.06 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
