Kazakhstan: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Molodezhnaya Mine in Aktobe, was the largest underground mine in Kazakhstan, producing approximately 2.12 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced chromium (773.64 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Molodezhnaya Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl, and is due to operate until 2024. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 1.84 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kostenko Coal Mine located in Karagandy. The Kostenko Coal Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA.

  • Kazakhstanskaya Coal Mine located in Karagandy was the third-largest mine, the Atasu Mine located in Karagandy was the fourth-largest mine, and the Ridder-Sokolny Mine located in East Kazakhstan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.82 mmtpa, 1.81 mmtpa and 1.7 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Kazakhstanskaya Coal Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA which is due to operate until 2050, the Atasu Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA which is due to operate until 2030 and the Ridder-Sokolny Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2040.

  • The five largest underground mines, i.e., Molodezhnaya Mine, Kostenko Coal Mine, Kazakhstanskaya Coal Mine, Atasu Mine, and Ridder-Sokolny Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 9.3 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
