Regulatory crackdowns could pose challenges for Musk’s vision of Twitter being a space for free speech, says GlobalData

Following the announcement that Elon Musk is acquiring Twitter;

Keshav Kumar Jha, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“Musk’s plan to transform Twitter into a platform to promote freedom of expression could face challenges owing to the need to restrict the proliferation of offensive or dangerous content on the site. Failure to do so would result in a spate of legal notices from governments worldwide to block accounts or remove objectionable tweets.

“The increase in regulations globally to crack down on social networks and make them more responsible for the content appearing on their platforms could also pose challenges for Musk, as he believes that Twitter’s potential to be the platform for free speech around the world is not being explored to the fullest extent.”
