TripAdvisor layoffs relate to long-term objectives to simplify operations

Following the news that TripAdvisor is laying off 25% of its workforce – around 900 in total;

Johanna Bonhill-Smith, Travel & Tourism Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view:

“Tripadvisor has undoubtedly taken this action to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 but this also relates to the broader initiative for a complete re-organization and downsizing of its business.

“The company is just one in a long line of travel companies that have been impacted by the severe restrictions in place to battle the virus. Companies are now undergoing strategic evaluation in a bid to prepare for the future or the ‘new normal’. It remains clear that consumer behaviour will undergo significant change post-pandemic and company structure will need to be re-aligned.

“Consolidation and the slimming down of certain brands and management restructure are all actions that are soon to be taken by the online travel company. This follows competitors Expedia and Booking Holdings, which have already planned to make more adjustments.
