Albertsons revamps loyalty programme

The update changes the previous hybrid reward model for a simpler single points system.

US-based Albertsons Companies has announced a revamp of its 'for U' loyalty programme, aiming to simplify the experience and offer greater value to its 38 million members.

The key changes focus on a streamlined points system, extended earning periods, and an automatic cash-off option for effortless savings.

Simplifying rewards

Previously, the programme utilised a mix of points and other reward structures. Now, a single points system takes the lead.

Members earn one point for every dollar spent on qualifying purchases, with redemptions starting at 100 points for discounts on groceries and gas (where available).

Albertsons is also extending the points-earning and redemption window to two months. This provides members with more flexibility to accumulate points and leverage them for larger savings.

Introducing automatic cash-off

A new automatic cash-off option allows members to automatically convert points into instant savings at the checkout.

The company said this eliminates the need for manual redemption and provides a frictionless way to maximise savings.

Traditional redemption options for groceries and gas remain available for those who prefer them.

The revamped programme retains existing benefits such as personalised weekly deals of up to 20% off, digital vouchers, a birthday treat, and a free monthly item.

“The updated for U loyalty programme delivers tremendous savings and value through a simple points-based system, ensuring that it is easier and more convenient than ever for our valued members to get rewarded for shopping with us,” said Sean Barrett, CMO for Albertsons.

FreshPass: A premium option for dedicated shoppers

Albertsons also offers a premium loyalty programme, FreshPass, for an annual fee of $99, or $12.99 per month.

FreshPass members enjoy additional benefits such as unlimited free delivery on orders exceeding $30, points that never expire, double points on Albertsons' own brands, and exclusive discounts on select products.
