China to spearhead global PTA capacity additions through 2028

Within Asia, entire PTA capacity additions are from upcoming projects in India and China.

Global purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next four years, potentially increasing from 121.23 million tonnes per annum in 2023 to 160.67 million tonnes per annum in 2028, registering a total growth of 32.5%.

Globally, 27 planned and announced PTA projects are expected to come online by 2028 predominantly in Asia followed by the Middle East.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 32.75 million tonnes per annum from 16 new build planned and announced projects.

Whereas, for expansion, it is expected to add a capacity of 0.15 million tonnes per annum from a planned project.

Some of the prominent projects in China include 'Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Qinzhou PTA Plant', 'Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fibre Yizheng PTA Plant 3', and 'Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Zhangzhou PTA Plant.'

Each of these projects has a capacity of three million tonnes per annum. The 'Reliance Industries Dahej PTA Plant 3' in India is also expected to commence operations with a capacity of three million tonnes per annum.

In the Middle East, there are four new-build planned projects that contribute capacity additions of 5.70 million tonnes per annum by 2028.

Two of these projects are located in Turkey, namely the 'Sasa Polyester Sanayi Adana PTA Plant' and the 'Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik PTA Plant.'

Each of these plants will have a capacity of 1.60 million tonnes per annum.

The expected start year for the Adana plant is 2024 while the Yumurtalik plant is projected to come online in 2028.

The Middle East's remaining capacity additions are through two projects in Saudi Arabia.

These projects, namely the 'Pan-Asia PET Resin Jazan PTA Plant 1' and the 'Pan-Asia PET Resin Jazan PTA Plant 2,' are expected to have a capacity of 1.25 million tonnes per annum each.

These projects are expected to come online in 2024 and 2028, respectively.

Further details of PTA capacity and capex analysis can be found in GlobalData’s new report, PTA Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028.
