Delphi's 500 bar GDi and Changan Auto

PHINIA’s Delphi brand has announced a first 500 bar GDi fuel system, to be installed within a Chagna Auto hybrid vehicle launching later this year

PHINIA’s Delphi brand has announced a first of its kind 500 bar GDi fuel system, to be installed within a Chagna Auto hybrid vehicle launching later this year.

A specialist in premium fuel systems, aftermarket parts and electrical systems, Delphi – a brand of PHINIA Inc - has recently announced that it will provide its high-performance 500 bar gasoline direct injection (GDi) fuel system to Changan Auto, a Chinese automotive manufacturer.

The system has been specifically designed to reduce exhaust particulate emissions as well as lowering fuel consumption without a costly engine redesign.

Alongside this, the improved fuel system delivers better engine efficiency, particularly during the warm-up phase before the catalytic converter starts. The system also boasts adaptability to various fuel types and different engine platforms ensures applicability without any major engine design modifications.

We spoke to Todd Anderson, PHINIA’s chief technology officer, to discuss the partnership process and to highlight how the fuel system works.

Todd Anderson

Just Auto (JA): How did the tie-up with Changan Auto come about?

Todd Anderson (TA): Firstly, Changan Auto is a powerhouse in the Chinese automotive market. As a leader in such a dynamic region for hybrid vehicles, Changan has the expertise and reach to truly showcase the potential of this technology.

Secondly, Changan's commitment to innovation perfectly aligns with our own. Their dedication to championing the development of hybrid vehicles in China resonates deeply with our mission to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency and clean emissions.

We believe this partnership is a major leap forward for hybrid technology and embodies our ethos of advancing sustainability today to power a carbon-free tomorrow.

Could you explain the Delphi 500 bar fuel system and how it works?

The power of the 500 bar system lies in the precision of its fuel delivery. It’s a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) system that operates at high pressure, so the engine gets exactly the fuel it needs, precisely when it needs it.

To realise these benefits, we revamped the fuel delivery system with a stronger pressure vessel and more robust rail interface to ensure a consistent flow of high-pressure fuel directly to the engine’s cylinders. Further to this, we’ve also increased the injectors electromagnetic force, which allows for precise control over the amount of fuel injected, leading to a smoother, more efficient combustion process.

What are some benefits of the system?

The 500 bar system extends its impact beyond just the engine's internal workings. It's designed to deliver benefits for everyone on the road.

Automakers benefit from the cost-effective nature of the 500 bar system. Unlike some green technologies, it delivers substantial improvements without requiring a major engine overhaul. This translates to a budget-friendly leap towards eco-conscious innovation. The system's efficiency even allows for a simpler after-treatment system on the vehicle. This means less bulky and expensive components, with cost efficiencies for manufacturers and value for consumers.

The 500 bar system is a truly adaptable solution. It can work with various fuel types, giving Changan the freedom to explore future options without needing to overhaul the fuel system entirely. Additionally, the system integrates seamlessly across different engine platforms. This broad applicability means these benefits can be implemented in a wide range of Changan vehicles, offering a greener and more efficient driving experience to a much larger audience.

For drivers, the system translates to cleaner air thanks to reduced exhaust particle emissions. This means healthier commutes and a smaller environmental footprint. But that's not all. The improved fuel delivery and precise metering translate into better gas mileage, offering savings at the pump.

When will this technology be debuted?

We're incredibly excited to see the 500 bar system hit the road later this year. Look out for Changan Auto's brand-new hybrid vehicle launch, the xEV, in Q2 2024. This will be the global debut of the 500 bar technology, and we believe it marks a significant step forward for the future of hybrid vehicles.
