McLeod Health to build new $45m hospital in South Carolina, US

The new hospital’s construction is expected to begin between 2024 and 2025.

McLeod Health has unveiled its plans to construct a new $45m hospital in Cheraw, Chesterfield County in the US state of South Carolina.

This new facility will be constructed on the existing McLeod Health Cheraw property. It will replace the existing hospital building, which was originally constructed in 1980.

The future hospital will incorporate the current emergency department, radiology, and other retained facilities, with additional construction details yet to be finalised.

McLeod Health Cheraw took over the operation of the Chesterfield General Hospital in 2015 by leasing the property from the owner, with plans to cater to the healthcare needs of the residents of Marlboro, Chesterfield, as well as nearby counties.

McLeod now intends to purchase the current hospital and its property for $5.8m.

The new hospital’s construction is now expected to begin between 2024 and 2025.

McLeod Health CEO Donna Isgett said: “A new building will reinforce McLeod’s commitment to our patients and caregivers.

“The new facility reinforces McLeod Health Cheraw as the model and destination for inpatient acute care and the outpatient services in the region.”

This construction project aims to support the expansion of surgery, orthopaedics, along with other specialties.

Besides, McLeod Health is planning to recruit more surgeons, primary care physicians, and specialists to enhance the hospital's service offerings.

The anticipated move to introduce advanced technology and recruit more specialists will further help in bolstering McLeod Health Cheraw's credibility among patients.

The latest development comes in response to address the increasing requirement for at least 35 inpatient beds in the area, as indicated in the Bed Need Analysis for Cheraw.

McLeod Health Cheraw CEO Bren Lowe added: “This reinvestment in the community continues to create a system for delivery of high-quality healthcare in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties.”

Founded in 1906, McLeod Health is a not-for-profit healthcare system with a network of seven hospitals across North and South Carolina.

With over 900 medical staff members, more than 2,900 licensed nurses, and nearly 15,000 team members, McLeod Health serves over one million people.

Last year, McLeod Health started construction on a new ambulatory surgery centre at its Carolina Forest campus in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
