Norway signs contracts for first commercial offshore wind farm

The Norwegian Government has signed a CfD with Ventyr Energi to support the development of the country’s first commercial offshore wind farm.

Ventyr Energi recently won the rights to develop a new wind farm in the Sørlige Nordsjø II zone, outbidding major international players such as Aker Offshore Wind and Norseman Wind. Sørlige Nordsjø II could deliver up to 1.5GW of wind power, marking the first step in Norway’s ambitious plans for offshore wind.

Referring to the CfD, Norway’s Minister of Energy Terje Aasland said: “This marks a significant milestone in Norway’s commitment to renewable energy. I strongly believe that Sørlige Nordsjø II can be a catalyst for achieving our ambitions for the offshore wind industry in Norway. This project is also an opportunity for the Norwegian supplier industry to play a central role in a new industrial era.”

”We at Ventyr are excited to take the next step in the development of Sørlige Nordsjø II. Our aim is to create a positive change through innovation in renewable energy and at the same time contribute to creating ripple effects both in local communities and in Norway,” Co-CEO of Parkwind François van Leeuw said on behalf of the Ventyr Energi consortium. “We are honoured to be part of Norway’s future in renewable energy and contribute to the ambition to deliver 30GW of offshore wind power by 2040.”

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has previously expressed his optimism for the future of Norway’s offshore wind sector. Following Ventyr’s auction success in March, he said: “Norway has ocean areas with rich wind recourses, and a supply industry with world-leading technology expertise. We will build on this fundament in the coming years by announcing new areas and new auctions”.
