Philippines' DPWH completes construction of Mount Cagua access road
The Philippines' Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the completion of a new access road to Mount Cagua in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Philippines.
The 2.1km two-lane road, located in Barangay Santa Clara, was constructed under the calendar year 2023 Tourism Road Infra Programme with an investment of 34.2m pesos (approximately $0.606m).
DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan, referencing a report from DPWH Region II director Reynaldo Alconcel, stated that the road offers "a smooth, and fast driving experience.”
The road is expected to provide safer and more convenient travel for tourists and mountaineers, offering a view of Mount Cagua, part of the northern Sierra Madre mountain range.
Bonoan said: “Prior to the completion of the road, hikers need to walk three to four hours just to reach the tip of Mt Cagua.”
The project was a collaborative effort between the DPWH Cagayan 1st District Engineering Office and the Philippines Department of Tourism.
The DPWH has also completed a slope protection structure in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, to protect coastal communities in the region from overflow.
DPWH Region 6 director Sanny Boy Oropel stated that the project saw the construction of a 105m concrete flood control system along the coastal barangay of Canhawan.
Offering Portland cement concrete-paved sidewalks, barriers, and stairs, the project will serve as an alternate fishing port and improve the transport of daily catches from nearby island barangays.
The Barangay Canhawan Seawall Project, implemented by the DPWH Guimaras District Engineering Office, was completed with a budget of 57.6m pesos.
Oropel said: “Situated along Guimaras Strait, Barangay Canhawan is vulnerable to flooding, storm surge, and high tide, especially during inclement weather.
“With the completed seawall, residents now have peace of mind knowing that they have an all-weather structure that will ensure their safety.”
It is further expected to provide improved accessibility to basic goods and services.
Last month, the DPWH announced the completion of the Bicos Bridge reconstruction project in Rizal, Nueva Ecija.
