SRV to construct new building at Tampere University campus

SRV has entered into a project management contract with University Properties of Finland to renovate and expand the Sähkötalo building at the Hervanta campus of Tampere University in the country.

The contract, valued at approximately €47m ($50.2m), will be added to SRV's order backlog for May this year.

The project involves the construction of a new Research Hub building at the current Sähkötalo site and the renovation of linked parts of the existing building.

The Research Hub is expected to centralise the university's experimental research environments, offering functional and spatial synergies, as well as building service benefits.

Tampere University will be the main user of the building housing several laboratories and ancillary facilities.

The size of the new building will be 8,800 gross square metres while the renovated section will cover approximately 6,900 gross square metres.

Additionally, about 12,000 gross square metres of the old property will be demolished.

The project is set to commence with basic renovation work in mid-2024, lasting approximately a year, followed by the commencement of construction of the new section in late 2024.

The Research Hub is expected to be completed in mid-2026, with final building demolitions and yard work concluding in early 2027.

The demolition phase will adhere to the Green Deal principles, aiming to recover 70% of construction and demolition waste for purposes other than energy or fuel.

Additionally, the project will have a 20kWp photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the new section and provisions for a 140kWp system.

SRV regional director Tero Karislahti said: “The basic renovation of Sähkötalo and the Research Hub require multidisciplinary expertise in technically demanding spaces.

“The project focuses on open information flow and interaction between different parties at all levels of the project. The facilities will be of high quality and adaptable to support the university's current and future cutting-edge research.”

In March this year, SRV signed a contract with Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company for the construction of 128 residential units in the Niittykumpu district of Espoo, Finland.
