SRV to construct new multipurpose building in Suutarila
SRV has agreed with the city of Helsinki to construct a new multipurpose building in Suutarila, Finland, under a life cycle model.
The contract, valued at €56m ($60.65m), will include life cycle services and is set to be added to SRV's order backlog for May 2024.
Helsinki City Council sanctioned the project plan on 28 February 2024 to replace the existing Suutarila multipurpose building.
Following this, SRV was selected as the service provider for the project.
SRV will oversee the design, construction, maintenance and servicing of the property for 20 years post-completion of construction.
The new building, spanning 11,000m², is designed to accommodate 900 children.
It will house a primary school, a daycare centre, youth facilities and a library.
The project's planning phase is expected to commence immediately, with demolition work beginning in early 2025.
Construction is expected to emphasise sustainability, aiming for a carbon footprint 30% below average.
Low-carbon materials will be preferred, and elements from the demolished building will be repurposed where possible.
The design will include renewable energy solutions such as heat pumps and solar panels to meet half of the property's electricity needs and 75% of its heating requirements.
SRV Lifecycle Projects director Jani Kuivamäki said: “We are pleased to start the implementation of the new school building with the city of Helsinki by utilising a life cycle approach. The life cycle model enables the city of Helsinki to provide services and high-quality teaching to city residents when the construction and maintenance of the property is carried out by a single operator.
“Ecology, sustainability and recycling are important values that will be emphasised in the construction of the Suutarila multipurpose building. This building supports the goals of the city of Helsinki and SRV for a carbon-neutral future.”
In May 2024 SRV forged a project management contract with University Properties of Finland to renovate and expand the Sähkötalo building at the Hervanta campus of Tampere University.
