TotalEnergies launches new battery storage project
TotalEnergies has announced the development of a new battery storage project in Belgium, set to begin operations at the end of 2025.
Located at TotalEnergies’ depot in Feluy, Belgium, the project will have a power rating of 25MW and a capacity of 75MWh, according to a press release.
Battery technology solution company Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, will provide technology for the system in the form of 40 Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion (Li-ion) containers.
"We are pleased to announce this new storage project in Feluy, just a year after we began our Antwerp project, which should be operational by the end of the year. These projects are fully in line with our integrated development strategy for electricity, not just in Belgium, but globally," said Olivier Jouny, senior vice-president of integrated power at TotalEnergies. "These technical systems also confirm the European leadership of our affiliate specialised in battery production, Saft, and its industrial-scale stationary storage know-how."
In May of last year, TotalEnergies launched its first battery energy storage project in Belgium. Located at its refinery in the city of Antwerp, the battery project will have a capacity of 75MWh; enough to power around 10,000 homes. Saft is also providing 40 of the same high energy Li-ion containers for this project, which is set to come online by the end of 2024.
Once both the Feluy and Antwerp developments are online, TotalEnergies will have a total combined storage capacity in Belgium of 150MWh. The two projects reflect around €70m ($75.79m) of global investment.
