Vistry to build affordable homes on former RAF Upwood base

Vistry Group has partnered with Hyde Group to construct new homes on the former Royal Air Force (RAF) Upwood base in Ramsey, England, UK.

Under the £35m ($43.58m) deal, the partners will build a total of 160 affordable houses and apartments at the site.

The upcoming development will consist of a range of one- and two-bedroom maisonettes, as well as two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom houses.

Vistry South East Midlands managing director Andy Reynolds said: “We are thrilled to be working with Hyde on this development which will not only meet the housing needs of the community but will also blend with the local environment.

“We're excited to be a part of Huntingdonshire’s growth and to be entrusted with the build of these much-needed new homes which will create a thriving and sustainable community.”

With full planning permission already secured, construction work on this affordable housing project is scheduled to commence later this year.

Some ‘well-established’ trees on the former RAF base will be retained to improve the area's natural beauty.

Ramsey, which is a market town located south of Peterborough and nine miles north of Huntingdon, will offer residents access to the nearby Benedictine monastery Ramsey Abbey.

Hyde development and sales director Steven Morrice said: “We’re really looking forward to working with Vistry Group to realise the vision for the redevelopment of RAF Upwood.

“All 74 social rent and 86 shared ownership homes will be energy-efficient, with air-source heat pumps and electrical vehicle charging points, and will be ready for their first residents in summer 2025.”

This comes after Vistry, in partnership with Chelmer Housing Partnership, announced the delivery of the first seven affordable homes at the St James’ Park development this month.
