Woodspin Spinnova fibre earns sustainable forestry certification

Woodspin, the exclusive manufacturer of the innovative wood-based Spinnova textile fibre, has achieved a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification which ensures that the wood sourced by Woodspin for its fibre production can be fully traced from its origin through to the final product.

The FSC certification assures Woodspin's brand partners and customers that the Spinnova eucalyptus wood used in manufacturing comes from responsibly managed forests that meet rigorous environmental, social and economic standards. This traceability guarantees the sustainable and ethical sourcing of raw materials.

"Consumers and stakeholders at every stage of the textiles value chain deserve to know the products they buy have been ethically produced from sustainably sourced materials," said Jari Aittakari, sales director at Woodspin. "This FSC certification demonstrates that Woodspin’s Spinnova fibre is produced to the highest standards from farm to fibre without compromise."

Woodspin was formed as a joint venture between Suzano, a producer of eucalyptus pulp, and Finnish biomaterials company Spinnova in 2020. Its first production facility commenced operations last March and they made plans to set up a second in 2024.

The eucalyptus wood is sourced from tree farms managed by Suzano in Brazil, with 40% of its vast landholdings permanently conserved.

The Spinnova fibre claims to offer major environmental benefits, with a 74% smaller carbon footprint and 98% less water used compared to conventional cotton. Woodspin has designed its production process to be waste-free by recycling any excess heat generated during the manufacturing process.

As innovation drives more sustainable textile fibre options, leading players like Woodspin are embracing FSC certification for responsible sourcing, described Fabian Farkas, chief markets officer at FSC International. He added: "This is a landmark step towards more scalable and sustainable fibre production."

Global fashion brands like Adidas and Bestseller are among the early adopters bringing this wood-based, biodegradable textile to apparel collections.

Bestseller’s menswear brand Jack & Jones, in collaboration with Spinnova, unveiled its second product in April made with Spinnova fibre and the first consumer product produced at the Woodspin facility.
