Business Description

Alberta Investment Management Corp (AIMCo) provides institutional investment management solutions. As of March 31, 2024, it had assets under management (AuMs) of about CAD165,791 million on behalf of its clients, which represents Alberta-based pensions, government, and endowment funds. AIMCo manages two types of funds: Balanced Funds, and Government and Specialty Funds. The Balanced Funds include public sector pension plans, endowment funds, and other balanced funds. The company combines active investment administration and asset allocation to derive higher returns. It manages assets of eight public sector pension plans, including local authorities, public service, management employees, special forces, judges supplementary retirement, judges, Alberta Teacher’s retirement and management supplementary retirement. As of March 31, 2023, the pension plans accounted for CAD118.4 billion of the company’s total AuMs. AIMCo manages the assets of four endowment funds, which include Heritage Savings Trust, Heritage Medical Research, Heritage Scholarship Trust, and Heritage for Science and Engineering. The endowment funds accounted for CAD27.3 billion of AuMs. The other balanced funds include a long-term disability bargaining unit and long-term disability management. The Government and Specialty Funds consist of special-purpose funds, and short-term funds, which include higher amounts of operating capital, as a result have a lesser risk-tolerance to market volatilities, and condensed risk relative to equities. It mainly invests in fixed-income assets and, consequently, has lower return anticipation. AIMCo manages special-purpose funds on behalf of Alberta’s arms-length organizations, including the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation, Workers’ Compensation Board, and others. As of March 31, 2024, the funds accounted for CAD12.4 billion of AuMs. The company manages several short-term funds to fund the continuing operations of the province. These include cash reserve accounts, general revenue, Alberta risk management fund, management closed pension membership, Alberta municipal services corporation, Alberta school foundation fund, A.L. Sifton Estate, and unclaimed property fund.
