Energy Co of Minas Gerais (CEMIG) is an integrated energy utility, which generates, transmits and distributes electricity. It also distributes natural gas and offers energy solutions. The company produces electricity using wind, solar and hydro sources. It also procures electricity from third parties for reselling to its customers.

CEMIG has undertaken various R&D initiatives focusing on innovation in energy systems and related fields. These initiatives include projects such as the expansion of solar energy use. The company has also worked on improving environmental performance through innovative methods, such as the R&D Project 601, which developed a model for predicting the risk of tree branches falling on electricity networks. In 2024, the company engaged 15 R&D projects, including the development of a mobile Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a generative AI solution for the electricity sector, a prototype plant for hydrogen production from biogas, smart personal protective equipment (PPE), an integrated photovoltaic and food production system, and IoT applications for real-time monitoring of power lines. The R&D unit of CEMIG includes the Vegetation Handling Unit, which is responsible for developing innovative methods and techniques to improve the company's environmental performance. In FY2024, the company incurred a research and development expenditure of BRL56.8 million which was 0.1% of the company's total revenue and grew 72.1% YoY.
