IBA is advancing proton therapy with its innovative research initiatives, particularly DynamicARC and ConformalFLASH. IBA is pioneering a new proton therapy technique known as DynamicARC. This method allows for dynamic spot-scanning irradiation and energy switching while the gantry rotates, combining the benefits of Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS), including the Bragg peak’s precise dose delivery with no exit dose, and conformal treatment. DynamicARC aims to enhance treatment quality by potentially improving dose conformity to the tumor and reducing the overall dose received by the patient. It also simplifies treatment planning and delivery, reduces treatment room time, and increases patient throughput with an optimized workflow. The IBA Proteus system is uniquely equipped to support DynamicARC, featuring fast energy-layer switching, small beam sizes, rapid scanning, and dose rate modulation. IBA is also leading research into FLASH irradiation, a breakthrough expected to significantly advance proton therapy. IBA’s approach, ConformalFLASH, integrates the advantages of FLASH with the proton Bragg peak. This technique aims to deliver doses in 1-2 beams, avoiding multi-field delivery, which could diminish the FLASH effect. Benefits include improved conformality with reduced entrance and exit doses, and the ability to treat 3-4 times more patients compared to traditional FLASH. IBA collaborates with leading proton therapy centers to explore FLASH irradiation mechanisms, focusing on radiobiology, clinical safety, and future workflow optimization. In FY2024, its R&D expenses amounted to EUR57.9 million, which as a percentage of revenue stood at 11.6% and grew 20.9% YoY.
