Lightbridge Corp (Lightbridge) is a developer of advanced fuels for nuclear reactor systems. The company emphasizes on enhancing the economics and safety of existing and new nuclear power plants, besides improving proliferation resistance of spent nuclear fuel. It is developing Lightbridge Fuel, a metallic fuel product that has superior heat transfer properties contributing to lower operating temperature of all-metal fuel. It is also expected to add incremental electricity at a lower levelized cost compared to renewable, fossil, or hydroelectric energy source, and other traditional nuclear fuels.

R&D Overview

The company focuses on developing novel nuclear fuel that offer enhanced power output in small modular reactors. It intends to further test fuel designs at the Halden research reactor located in Halden, Norway. Lightbridge also focused on rapid commercialization of its innovative nuclear technology. The first SMRs are expected to begin operations in 2029. The company intends to invest approximately US$6.5 million in the research and development of nuclear fuel over the next 12 to 15 months.
