NMDC's Research & Development (R&D) initiatives focus on product and technology development projects related to ores, minerals, and ironmaking to maintain process excellence and operational efficiency. The state-of-the-art R&D Centre in Hyderabad, declared a "Centre of Excellence" by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), spearheads these efforts. It specializes in mineral processing, beneficiation, pelletization studies, process flowsheet development, mineralogical studies, material handling and storage, metallurgical studies of iron ore and coal, chemical analysis, and process improvement. The centre provides innovative solutions, process improvements, and technology upgrades to mitigate operational challenges across NMDC's units while extending technical and analytical services to external agencies. To handle low-grade ores and mineral resources in an environmentally friendly and water-efficient manner, the centre is actively developing facilities for dry beneficiation. Furthermore, recognizing the growing strategic importance of critical minerals, the centre is developing advanced facilities for the characterization, testing, and analysis of critical minerals to support clean energy technologies, advanced manufacturing, electronics, and national resource security. Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory and pilot-scale facilities, NMDC's R&D Centre actively undertakes collaborative research with leading national and international research institutions, universities, laboratories, and industry partners to implement practical solutions. In FY2026, the company spent INR246.9 million in R&D activities, which stood at 0.1% of the company’s revenue.
