R&D Overview
R&D focuses on improving the operational efficiencies of the company. It focuses on basic and applied research in two emerging resource types, underground coal gasification and methane hydrates. It has R&D collaboration with a consortium of seven Indian Institutes of Technology for developing indigenous technologies to enhance exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons and alternate sources of energy. It also operates the Gas Hydrate Research and Technology Centre (GHRTC) at Mumbai. In FY2023, the company spent INR5,424.3 million on R&D, which stood at 0.1% of the company’s revenue.

Overview
Upstream assets include conventional and unconventional sources such as gas hydrates, coal bed methane, shale gas and deepwater. ONGC carries out oil and gas explorations in India and other countries. It operates through three geographical sub-segments, onshore, and offshore India, and Outside India. - ONGC Videsh, its overseas arm, has participation in 32 projects in 15 countries. - Portfolio includes 14 producing, four discovered/under development, 14 exploratory and three pipeline projects. - ONGC discovered seven out of the eight oil and gas producing basins in India. In FY2023, the company drilled over 461 wells, comprising 85 exploratory, 319 development wells and 57 side-track wells.
