Enforcement of proposed new UK laws for internet-connected household devices, must be resourced correctly, says Globaldata

As the UK government proposes new laws aimed at ensuring that internet-connected household devices are more cyber-secure;

David Bicknell, Principal Analyst, Technology Thematic Research at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“These new laws show that the UK government is becoming increasingly interventionist in regulating the technology space. However, any government committed to cybersecurity must also consider how it is going to enforce these laws by providing the necessary resources.

‘The government will need to put teeth behind any new legislation. The Information Commissioner’s Office has had to grow to match the extent of its data protection investigations and now has significant expertise.

‘There is a risk that the Governments goal of taking cybersecurity seriously and protecting the public gets lost in spin around the government’s bid to be ‘a global leader in online safety.’

‘No-one, outside of the government, cares about perception. What they care about is cyber-safety.’’
