Companies seen hiring for roles to lead sustainable practices in travel and tourism industry, finds GlobalData

A notable shift is underway in the travel and tourism industry as companies are increasingly prioritizing sustainable practices, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and conservation efforts in their hiring strategies. Against this backdrop, airline and airport companies are posting some senior/mid-level environmental, social, and governance (ESG)-related jobs for initiatives around business operations, reveals the Job Analytics Database of GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The ESG-related hiring is likely to increase as companies build internal resources to manage compliance with new reporting standards, decarbonize their operations and supply chains, and develop low-carbon products and services.”

Here are some of the ESG-related job postings by major companies:

Ryanair Holdings Plc’s “Sustainability Manager” role monitors and reports fuel usage and CO2 emissions for compliance reporting such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS), or Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and identifies the best strategies to reduce carbon intensity and optimize fuel costs.

Air Canada‘s “Manager, Sustainable Procurement” role looks at sustainable procurement as the integration of ESG criteria and CSR principles into traditional procurement processes and decisions to manage the implementation of the Sustainable Procurement Roadmap.

United Airlines Holdings Inc’s “Director – Environmental Sustainability” role will implement environmental sustainability strategies as part of its overall global dedication to zero out greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 without relying on voluntary carbon offsets.

The “Sr Sustainable Fuels Consultant” role at Southwest Airlines Co looks at the Senior Sustainable Fuels Consultant deliver on purpose by owning the development, execution, and evolution of Southwest’s sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) strategy and goals. This role focuses on vetting SAF opportunities, negotiating SAF offtakes, owning SAF relationships, and driving sustainable fuel opportunities to achieve Southwest’s announced decarbonization goals.

WestJet Airlines Ltd’s “Program Manager – Environmental Services” role will develop, implement, manage, and ensure continuous improvement of the WestJet Group’s Environmental Management System to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices through interpretation of legislation and guidelines, interacting with provincial, national, and international regulators and enforcement of the policy.

The “Sustainability Manager – Carbon” role by Gatwick Airport Ltd will lead the approach to reduce aircraft and surface access emissions with appropriate industry bodies and schemes, such as Sustainable Aviation, Jet Zero, and the Department for Transport (DfT) to achieve Net Zero aviation (including hydrogen, electric planes, SAF etc).

InterContinental Hotels Group Plc’s “Director of Engineering, Decarbonization & Operational Support SEAK & JAPAC” role is a newly created role to provide direction & support to IHG’s ‘Existing Portfolio’ of Managed & Franchised Hotels in the areas of sustainability and decarbonization in line with “2030 Journey to Tomorrow” decarbonization ambitions. The role will look after a large geographic area of South East Asia, Australasia, Pacific and Japan.
