Business Description

Geron Corp (Geron) develops therapies with the potential to prolong and improve the lives of patients with hematologic malignancies. The company organizes its business into a single reportable operating segment: Biopharmaceuticals, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for blood cancers, particularly its product RYTELO, a telomerase inhibitor. It serves the healthcare market, focusing on hematologic malignancies such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myelofibrosis (MF). Its investigational telomerase inhibitor, imetelstat, is designed to target the underlying drivers of these disorders. Imetelstat has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval as Rytelo for treating adult patients with low- to intermediate-1 risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with transfusion-dependent anemia. This approval applies to patients needing four or more red blood cell units over eight weeks who either failed to respond to, or lost response to, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), or who are not eligible for these therapies. Imetelstat is backed by favorable data from the IMerge Phase 3 trial, which met its primary endpoint of eight-week transfusion independence and a key secondary endpoint of 24-week transfusion independence, demonstrating statistically significant benefits versus placebo. Meaningful efficacy was seen across multiple patient subsets, including groups defined by the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS). The most commonly reported serious adverse events were controllable thrombocytopenia and neutropenia. Beyond lower-risk MDS, Geron is progressing imetelstat in several myeloid hematologic malignancies. A Phase 3 study, IMpactMF, is enrolling intermediate-2 or high-risk myelofibrosis patients who are relapsed or refractory to JAK inhibitors, with overall survival as the primary endpoint. Geron is also running a Phase 1 combination study, IMproveMF, and an investigator-sponsored Phase 2 trial, IMpress, in higher-risk MDS and acute myeloid leukemia. The biopharmaceutical segment concentrates on developing and commercializing innovative therapies for blood cancers, especially via RYTELO, a telomerase inhibitor. It supports the healthcare sector, specifically addressing hematologic malignancies including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myelofibrosis (MF).

R&D Overview

Geron is actively engaged in research and development initiatives focused on the development of RYTELO for the treatment of several myeloid hematologic malignancies. The company is conducting various clinical trials, including the IMpactMF Phase 3 clinical trial, the ongoing Phase 1 IMproveMF combination clinical trial in frontline MF, the Phase 2 investigator-led IMpress clinical trial in higher-risk MDS and acute myeloid leukemia, and the Phase 1/2 investigator-led IMAGINE clinical trial in relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia. Additionally, Geron Corp is pursuing regulatory approvals for RYTELO in jurisdictions outside of the U.S., such as the recent marketing authorization in the EU. The R&D activities of the company are supported by contract research organizations (CROs) and other vendors. These units are responsible for managing clinical trial activities, including the amount of work completed on each trial, and ensuring that expenses are recorded based on contracted amounts agreed to with the CROs. The company monitors activities conducted and managed by the CROs through internal reviews, review of contractual terms, and correspondence with CROs. In FY2025, Geron employed 67 individuals engaged in or directly supporting its research and development activities, investing US$71.4 million in this area.
