R&D Overview

Lanxess R&D focused on increasing competitiveness and expanding the product portfolio through the development of innovative products and processes, as well as optimizing existing production processes. The company's research programs are aligned with customer needs in end markets, with product innovation activities consolidated within respective business units. The Global Technology & Innovation department supports and complements these activities with a focus on process innovation, planning new processes, and integrating new technologies. Group-wide innovation issues are coordinated by the Corporate Development Group function. The R&D units of the company are located in Leverkusen, the Uerdingen district of Krefeld, and Mannheim in Germany, and in Naugatuck, Kalama, and Wilmington in the United States. Additionally, the company operates the Asian Application Development Center at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in China and a modern application development center in Thane, India. These units are responsible for testing new formulations for disinfectants and fragrances, innovative flame retardants, new and optimized ion exchange resins, and sustainable lubricant and plastic additives. The products essentially comprise disinfectant, hygiene and preservative solutions, flavors and fragrances, technologies for the treatment of water and other liquids, and precursors and intermediates for the agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals industries. Some of its major brands include Preventol, Kathon, Nagardo, Neolone, Velcorin, Virkon, Oxone, among others. Liquid Purification Technologies: It supplies ion exchange resins for treating water and other liquid media which are used in semiconductor and photovoltaic, energy generation, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, mining, metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical, food and beverages and water treatment industries. Its products are marketed under LewaPlus, Bayoxide and Lewatit brands. Flavors & fragrances: It manufactures flavors and fragrances, animal nutrition and preservatives products which are used in cosmetics and personal care products, detergents and cleaning agents, beverages, baked goods, candles, oils, and animal feed industry. Saltigo: It is dedicated to the custom synthesis and production of small molecules. It serves the needs of customers in the pharma, agro, and specialty chemical industries. Its product portfolio includes active ingredients, phosgene derivatives, triazole and triazol derivatives, reagents and building blocks, polymer additives and functional products, ligands, and insect repellent. It provides these products to seals, profiles, drive belts and tire markets, among others. Polymer additives: It manufactures bromine, phosphorus and bromine derivatives which act as a base for manufacturing complex molecules. These chemicals are used in flame retardants, agrochemicals, butyl rubber, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, polymers and biocides, paints & coatings, oil production and colorants for plastics or for inkjet printing inks applications. Brands: Emerald Innovation, Firemaster, Disflamoll, Levagard, Mesamoll, K-FLEX, Ultramoll, Macrolexand Levanyl. Lubricant additives: It provides ready-to-use lubricants, synthetic base fluids and additives and additive systems for lubricants. Brands: Additin, Naugalube, Hatcol, Synton, Durad and Reolube. In FY2025, the segment's capital expenditure stood at US$129 million, which decreased 0.8% YoY.
