Business Description
RWE AG (RWE) is an energy utility company, which has presence in the entire energy value chain, from lignite production and electricity generation to energy trading and operation of distribution networks, and supply of electricity, gas and energy solutions. It serves residential, commercial, industrial, and corporate customers in Western Europe, Benelux, and Eastern Europe. RWE operates its business through five segments: Offshore Wind, Onshore Wind/Solar, Hydro/Biomass/Gas, Supply & Trading, Coal/Nuclear, and Others. It had 9 direct subsidiaries by the end of FY2022.
R&D Overview
RWE's R&D efforts are focused on renewable energy projects, in order to help reduce the global CO2 emissions. RWE has approximately 30 green hydrogen products located across Europe. In the next few years, RWE will invest several billion euros in projects all over the world. Some live projects include GetH2 in Germany, which aims to develop hydrogen infrastructure in Germany by constructing a 100 MW electrolysis plant and has around 40 partners involved in its construction. The company plans to develop a new center for excellence in Pembroke, in the UK, which is in the gas-fired power plant. Under its NorthH2 project, RWE also plans to generate green hydrogen by using one GW energy from the North Sea coast in Netherlands. It also invests on Power-to-Gas technologies that convert green electricity to hydrogen. The company focuses on developing new business models to meet customer needs and broaden its offering beyond the sale of electricity and gas. Through external partners from the engineering and chemical industries, and research institutions, it carries out R&D activities. In FY2022, it spent EUR20 million on its R&D activities. As of December 31, 2022, RWE had 1,184 patents and patent applications, based on around 233 inventions.
