Tokyo Gas Co Ltd (Tokyo Gas) is a gas utility thatproduces, supplies, and sells LNG and electricity to various customers. Its business activities also include construction business, leasing and management of land and buildings and information processing service among others. The company offers its services in the cities of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Gunma. The company operates through six reportable business segments, namely, Gas, Electric Power, Overseas, Energy-Related, Real Estate and Others. Its Others segment includes information processing service and shipping business. In FY2023, the company’s capital expenditure stood at JPY184,941 million, which declined 6.1% YoY.
R&D Overview
Tokyo Gas utilizes its resources towards the development of various technologies which could benefit its business. The company focuses on the development of fuel production technology using CO2, in collaboration with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and IHI Corporation. It also focuses on the development of methane production using low-temperature process as a part of development of innovative technology related to synthetic methane production. The company also conducts various studies related to decarbonization solutions in areas such as methanation, hydrogen and biomethane. Tokyo Gas carries out this through a memorandum of understanding with Shell Eastern Petroleum limited. It also collaborates with Kyushu University and Japan Renewable Energy Co. Ltd. In FY2023, the company spent JPY7,362 million in research and development, which as a percentage of total revenue stood at 0.2%.
