R&D Overview
West Hertfordshire remains committed to advancing clinical research that improves treatments, enhances patient experience, and contributes to the future of healthcare. The Trust appointed two Directors of Research to further strengthen the research agenda and help shape a new Research Strategy aimed at expanding research opportunities. A key milestone this year has been the identification of a new dedicated research space at Watford, which will house both clinical and office space, providing an improved base for research activity. As of 2025, 2,145 participants took part in research studies at the Trust, including 135 clinical studies, 65 actively recruiting new participants, and 124 studies supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). These studies included trials of new medications and treatments, questionnaire-based research, studies using anonymised data, and commercial research projects. All research was conducted in line with national regulations and governance frameworks, with oversight from the Health Research Authority (HRA). Clinical teams across the Trust continue to integrate research into everyday care, ensuring access to cutting-edge treatments and technologies. The R&D unit of West Hertfordshire includes the newly appointed Directors of Research, who are responsible for strengthening the research agenda and shaping a new Research Strategy aimed at expanding opportunities for research.
