Leading health and wellness company’s global innovation program gains key insights to help make decisions

The Situation

With plans to grow its product portfolio, a well known health and wellness company operating in the weight management, dietary supplements and sports nutrition space wanted to know about the latest global packaging trends and consumer preferences to guide decision making for their regional and global innovation and new product development program.

Our Solution

Drawing on our global consumer surveys in 2021/22, here are some examples of the in-depth analysis that we were able to provide the client:

  • Importance of packaging factors to consumers
We covered plastic-free, reduced carbon footprint, lower weight/lightweight packaging, compostable/biodegradable, refillable, tamper-proof, resealable, unique design, sharable, hygienic, durable, convenient, easy to open, easy to recycle, transparent/see-through, easy to dispose of, etc.
  • Preference of packaging material and pack size
We reviewed 5 packaging materials; glass, cardboard, plastic, metal and paper and unpackaged, together with three pack sizes; small, standard, and bulk/large. The analysis was broken down by different product types.
  • How information displayed on packaging influences product choice
We covered areas such as the environment, sustainability, certifications (organic etc), health labelling (protein, sugar etc), and recycling of packaging details, etc.

Outcome

The client used the insight provided in our report to help make decisions about product development, ensuring that new packaging designs were aligned with consumer preferences to improve product satisfaction.

Three insight examples:

  • The Top 5 most significant factors in a product for consumers
  • The most popular packaging materials with consumers in 5 key categories
  • The Top 5 product/labelling information consumers look for in 5 key categories
